Anime Programming
Philcon 2004 will be presenting a broad and expansive glimpse of Japanese animation, or animé, for your intellectual and viewing pleasure. Our panel discussions will be geared to appeal to any and all, from the Interested Beginner to the Casual Watcher and even the Veteran Know-It-All. We will also be hosting an “Animé Mixer” party Saturday evening, complete with screenings of some of the newest titles to reach America, as well as raffles and giveaways. And, as always, the ever-present Animé Room showing the best Sci-Fi & Fantasy Japan has to offer.

Anime Panel Schedule
Fri 7:00PM in 409 -- Anime Obscura (#74)
Galkiba? Time Stranger?? YAIBA?!? Despite the tireless efforts of domestic anime importers, countless TV shows and movies will probably never be picked up stateside. Grab a seat and see what you're missing.
Fri 9:00PM in 409 -- These Are A Few Of My Favorite Scenes (#80)
Remember that show with that guy who did that thing? Take a look at some of our fondest anime-induced memories. Who knows? You just might find a new favorite of your own.
Sat 10:00AM in 409 -- A.B.C.'s of Anime (#73)
Japanese animation (anime) is one of the fastest growing mediums in Fantasy/SF. But WHAT IS ANIME and what makes it so popular? We will explore it's inception, the genre's first forays into American television and on through it's explosion onto the mainstream.
Sat 12:00PM in 409 -- The Influence of Japanese Culture on American Science Fiction & Fantasy (#79)
A discussion and exploration into the tremendous impact Japanese culture has had on our favorite genres over the years, both obvious to subtle.
Sat 3:00PM in 409 -- Science Fiction and Fantasy in Animation (#78)
Ever since Gertie the Dinosaur, and on up through Astro Boy and Cowboy Bebop, animation has provided a window into the visions of science fiction and fantasy. But for decades, Americans have regarded animation as entertainment for children. Panelists will discuss animation, its role in American, European and Asian cultures, and how the current animation renaissance will affect science fiction and fantasy.
Sat 5:00PM in 409 -- In Their Own Words (#77)
Many of these panels will dwell on the look or content of anime. But what about the sound? Here's your chance to get to know what happens in the recording booths from the mouths of the professionals themselves.
Sat 6:00PM in 410 -- Anime Mixer (#270)
Sun 12:00PM in 409 -- Bad Anime, Bad!! (#76)
The pain! Oh dear God, the pain!! How could you ever allow these shows to see the light of day?! We take no responsibility for any psychological damage done when we show (re: inflict upon) you some of the worst of the worst. And they say 'Cruel & Unusual Punishment' is illegal in this country!
Sun 2:00PM in 409 -- Anime, Your History (#75)
Art imitates life. This concept echoes throughout printed and visual mediums constantly. Be it Westerns, epic Roman-era films, European costume-dramas and, you guessed it, anime. Much of anime draws inspiration directly from history. We will point out and elaborate upon these references from Japan's early past, samurai & ninja, World War II, modern-day social roles to historic events the world over.
