Philcon 2004 Special Guest:

Michael Swanwick has called Tom Purdom's short fiction "an astonishing string of first-rate stories..... Purdom's humane take on the future, his willingness to imagine worlds in which people treat each other better than they do now, makes his work distinctive." David Hartwell has praised Tom's work for being "firmly grounded in setting" with "a pleasant complexity of motivation." Other editors and reviewers have called his science fiction "innovative," "colorful," "sophisticated," and "multi-dimensional".
Tom sold his first stories in the late 50's and his contributions to the science fiction scene include short stories, novelettes, novels, articles, book reviews, and an anthology of science writing by leading science fiction writers. The editors who have bought his work include legends such as John W. Campbell and Frederik Pohl and contemporary stars such as Gardner Dozois and Stanley Schmidt.
In recent years, he has mostly written short stories and novelettes which have appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine and been reprinted in David Hartwell's Year's Best SF series and other anthologies. His Asimov's novelette Fossil Games was a Hugo nominee in 2000 and he started 2004 with a novelette in Asimov's and a short story in Gregory Benford's new anthology MICROCOSMS.
Other contributions by Tom in the service of science fiction include two terms as vice president of SFWA, one term as SFWA's Eastern Regional Director, and several years of volunteer work for the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and Philcon.
