What is Film?

Welcome to film programming. So what the frell does that mean? Good question. In a nutshell, we will be covering how science fiction, fantasy and horror relate to film and video media. We hope to provide a wide range of topics. Below will be a list of some of the programming we are planning to do at Philcon. From informative panels such as the "The best films you've never heard of" to educational programs like "Screen Writing 101" we hope to have something for everyone, regardless of your personal interests.

Also, in continuing Philcon's tradition of showing the odd, unusual, and rare selections in our video room, will have some thing for every taste. In addition to the big budget Hollywood films, we will be showing some titles you may not have heard of. Also, we will be showing several pieces from both local film makers, as well as some other surprises.

One new inclusion this year will be discussion panels immediately following some of the movies. You'll be given a chance to comment on, and dissect the film with other viewers.

So please, take the time to stop by, you may surprised.

Program

Film Program: The following is the list of potential film programs that will be run at Philcon 2003.

The Some of the Best Films You Have Never Heard Of
A look at some of the great and noteworthy films and video being released around the world. We will also be giving a brief lesson on the DVD zone system and the difference in the various video formats (PAL, NTSC, VCD) and what this means to the home viewer.
The Changing Face of the Fang
How has the vampire changed in books, TV and films over the last 30 years and does the rise of realities like HIV, Ebola, and bio-terrorism have anything to do with it?
Past the Splatter
Just because a film is violent and gory, does it make bad? How and when does carnage, violence, blood, etc. actually add to a film?
Carnage Con Queso
Our favorite cheesy horror, fantasy, and science fiction films. A chance to proclaim (and defend) your love of all those wonderful straight to video releases.
The British Are Coming
There is much more to British Sci-Fi TV than just Doctor Who and The Prisoner. A discussion of some gems from the UK now becoming available on our shores (Blake’s 7, Sapphire and Steel, Ultraviolet, Ghostwatch, etc.)
Screenplays 101
An introduction to the ins and outs of writing a screenplay and how it differs from the normal writing process.
H.P. Lovecraft, King of all Media!
Move over Howard Stern, you don't have nothing on Howard Lovecraft. Stuffed animals, movies, comic books, games, and even tribute bands, HP Lovecraft has inspired them all. A look past the printed word at the on-going legacy of Lovecraft.
TEOTWAWKI and I Feel Fine
Hollywood seems to have an obsession with the end of the world. From the giant insects, alien invaders, and mutant-filled wastelands of the 50’s to the terminators and plague zombies of today, what do these films reflect about the age in which they were produced and what do they say about us?
Watch the Skies!
The 50’s were a golden age for the Sci-Fi film. All manner of menace, born of the lab, or from deep space, threatened mankind. A look at these gems and the reasons behind them, in what can be arguably called the golden age of Sci-Fi movies.
When There Is No More Room In Hell...
Whether you call them zombies, ghouls, or the living dead, there is no discounting the horror invoked by these names. Around the world, film-makers have brought us visions of worlds consumed by the worst of all monsters, those who were once ourselves.
