Konnichi-wa, minna-san!! Greetings, One and All!!
Welcome to Philcon's Anime Programming! This year we will be bringing forth a comprehensive, detailed and downright entertaining exploration into the many and varied facets of Japanese animation.
But what is anime?
Anime is the japanese word for animation and has been embraced as the genre's term by it's fans here in America. Any more questions?
TONS!
Then scroll down and see what we have to offer. Our panel discussions are geared to appeal to any and all, from the Interested Beginner to the Casual Watcher and even the Veteran Know-It-All.
Will there be clips?
You'd better believe it! Our guests will be armed with plenty of topic-specific clips ranging from the classic to the obscure & the painfully hilarious to merely painful (re: "Bad Anime, Bad!").
Anything else?
Sure thing! We will be hosting an "Anime Mixer" party Satuday evening complete with screenings of some of the newest titles here in America as well as raffles and giveaways.
Why do they have such big eyes?
Er, best save questions like that for the panels.
Is "Pokemon" a sequel to "Akira"?
What?!
And is Speed Racer's Mach 5 faster than the Roadrunner?
Oh please...

Anime Program: The following is the list of potential anime programs that will be run at Philcon 2003.
- Anime 101: Introduction to Anime
- Anime is one of the fastest growing mediums in the Fantasy/SF genre. But what IS ANIME and what makes it so popular? Let our panel of experts answer your questions while guiding you from it's inception to the first forays into American TV and on through it's explosion onto the mainstream.
- Anime 201: Advanced Anime
- Now that you've learned the basics you're ready to tackle the finer points of anime as well as it's impact on America. We'll be covering fan clubs & conventions, the rise of domestic anime importers, anime on mainstream television and new titles that MUST BE SEEN!
- Anime, Your History
- Art imitates life. This concept echoes throughout printed and visual mediums constantly. Be it Westerns, epic Roman-era films, European costume-dramas and, you guessed it, anime. Much of anime draws inspiration directly from history. We will point out and elaborate upon these references from Japan's early past, samurai & ninja, World War II, modern-day social roles to historic events the world over.
- Bad Anime, Bad!!
- The pain! Oh dear God, the pain!! How could you ever allow these shows to see the light of day?! We take no responsibility for any psychological damage done when we show (re: inflict upon) you some of the worst of the worst. And they say 'Cruel & Unusual Punishment' is illegal in this country!
- From Page To Screen And Back Again
- Like in American cinema, many of the best anime titles have their roots in printed mediums, be it comics or novels. Concurrently many more are expanded and expounded upon in other printed formats such as anime magazines, film books, serialized comics and the almighty Roman Album. Don' t know what that is? Drop by and find out.
- In Their Own Words
- Many of these panels will dwell on the look or content of anime. But what about the sound? Here's your chance to get to know what happens in the recording booths from the mouths of the professionals themselves.
- The Influence Of Japanese Culture On American Science Fiction & Fantasy
- An discussion and exploration into the tremendous impact Japanese culture has had on our favorite genres over the years, both obvious to subtle.
- These Are A Few Of My Favorite Scenes
- Remember that show with that guy who did that thing? Take a look at some of our fondest anime-induced memories. Who knows? You just might find a new favorite of your own.
