Presented by the Philadelphia Science
Fiction Society Born in 1953, Walter Jon Williams
began writing in his late twenties, dabbling in science
fiction for several years. With the advent of cyberpunk, his
work proliferated, and he quickly became one of the
movement's foremost authors. His first accomplishment in his
new-found field was the Hardwired stories, in which
the author's fascination by and dexterity with such concepts
as corporate fascism and bio-mechanical implants were richly
apparent. Since then, Williams has published
other storylines, like Crown Jewels and Days of
Atonement. Recent novels to his credit include City
on Fire, Rock of Ages, and 1995's
Metropolitan, which was nominated for the Nebula
Award. His 1985 book Knight Moves, a novel about an
immortal's attempts to repopulate a ravaged Earth with
mythological creatures, was nominated for the Philip K. Dick
Award. Walter Jon Williams's work has
appeared in The Year's Best Science Fiction, Isaac
Asimov's SF, and other notable SF magazines. He has also
created two games, Privateers and Gentlemen in 1981
and Hardwired, based on his story sequence by the
same name, in 1990. Excerpts from City
on Fire ,
Hardwired,
and Rock
of Ages are all at his
